Description
This unique coin set consists of two coins – 1 oz silver and 1 g gold and is dedicated to the waterbird with a long beak and a large throat pouch used for catching prey – the Pelican.
The reverse of the silver coin contains a colourful image of two lovely pelicans standing on the water with the ocean and clouds in the background. One pelican is standing on a pier post and the second one is a close-up of a pelican. The reverse of the gold coin has a spectacular image of a beautiful pelican on a pier post with the ocean in the background. Both coins’ obverses feature the Barbados Coat of Arms. The Golden Shield of the Arms carries two Pride of Barbados flowers (the National Flower) and the Bearded Fig Tree (ficus Citrifolia). On either side of the shield are the supporters-on the right is a dolphin symbolic of the fishing industry and on the left is a pelican, after Pelican Island, a small outcrop later incorporated into the Deep Water Harbour development. Above the shield is a helmet and mantling and on a wreath is the arm and hand of a Bajan holding two crossed pieces of sugar cane symbolic of the sugar industry. The Coat of Arms carries the motto “Pride and Industry.” Although the pelican is depicted on the Coat of Arms, the bird is rarely seen in or around Barbados. The Pelican represents a small island that once existed off Barbados called Pelican Island. It was acquired to fortify the Deep Water Harbour.
