  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Overall patina of age and wear including a few tiny places where the wood is showing through and please see especially pic #12. No actual damage of any sort. No chips, cracks, warpage, or structural issues. Lacquer at least 98% or 99% intact overall and not bubbling up anywhere. All the parts tight and secure with nothing loose and no corner separations or similar. Lid goes on and off easily and neatly. Sits nicely on the tabletop, not crooked or wobbly. Pics are of the actual item offered for sale and show the condition well.

    Description

    Very handsome old Japanese lacquered wood document box in the bright red monochrome with a black interior.
    Being lacquer over wood, this piece was entirely hand-made and represents an incredible amount of work for the money.
    Interior measures are about 9.5" long and 3.5" wide and 1.5" tall and please also see tape measure pics.
    A very useful size and shape that would work well for eyeglasses, keys, or hundreds of other objects, or a very nice presentation box for an important gift.
    Signed as shown, but I'm not familiar with this maker.
    Overall very restrained modernist aesthetic that reveals a high quality in the details - the rounded corners, the fitted lip between the top and the bottom, the fully lacquered interior, etc.
    Comes from a local Dallas estate, probably ca. the 1950s/1960s.
